Sisters?
In the words of the late, Poetess Maya Angelou, we are born to be phenomenal women-phenomenally. But how do we embody being a phenomenal woman from the core of ourselves through every part of ourselves? From the stride of our steps, the joy in our feet, the curves of our backs?
How do we stand in our power? In our phenomenal greatness? Have a joy that cannot be explained in words and explore and understand our inner mysteries?
I believe that when you love yourself, know your inherent value and worth, are courageous enough to follow your dreams and passions, you then embody what it means to be a phenomenal woman.
I submit to you that this does not materialize on its own or by happenstance, but we must take deliberate and conscious actions every day of our lives to make it so. You have to make sure that you prioritize yourself. As women and natural caretakers, we put everyone’s needs before our own, so that by the time we get to ourselves, we are depleted.
And I used to do that with work and my career. I was that chic, putting my work before my relationships and before myself. For many years, I did that thinking that I could control my career, my education so it was safe bet…wrong. That did not work! And I landed flat on my face.
To me, loving yourself means taking of yourself–your body, mind and spirit. How many of us don’t take care of our bodies? We feed our children, our mates and neglect to sit down and enjoy our meal. We skip meals or rush through them because we are too busy to stop. We have too much to do to even stop and drink a glass a water sometimes. How many of us don’t exercise because we are too busy. Too busy to go for a walk, to go to the gym, too busy to nurture the only body we have been given?
Loving ourselves means taking care of our minds. How many of us don’t feed our minds, watch pointless television, spend our time regurgitating old worn out thoughts and stories, sometimes with people who don’t add value to our lives? We don’t fill our minds with new and different and bigger ideas and concepts. I remember some years ago, watching American idol on TV and thinking, why am I sitting here watching other people pursue their dreams….really? What a waste of time. So now, I don’t much TV at all because I want to leave room for creativity and newness and freshness. If we spend our time bogging our minds down with inconsequential matters, then we don’t have room to explore the mysteries of ourselves and gain access to the phenomenal woman within.
Loving ourselves means taking care of our spirits or rather allowing our spirits to take care of us. When we don’t love ourselves, we block and cover her up…that spiritual phenomenal woman inside. Who you are is so much than a body; much more than a mind, who you are cannot be described, cannot be contained, cannot be explained. Who you are must be experienced. But we have to put time in if we are to experience ourselves as phenomenal women. You have to have a love affair with yourself. And that takes nurturing. You have make that your priority, before family, career, friends, a social life. We have to spend time getting to know ourselves.
To be a phenomenal woman, you have to know your value. Know when saying yes is good for you and saying no is beneficial. You embody a phenomenal woman when you are okay with going against the grain. And not going with the flow. When you are comfortable in your skin. For many of us, I know for me—that was a process. For asking for what I want and knowing that I am worth it. Sometimes, I think we don’t even realize that we are selling ourselves short. We don’t realize that we are undervaluing ourselves by accepting less pay or saying yes when we don’t mean to, or compromising ourselves so as to not make waves. Many of us have been there. I have. But when I began to discover my innate goodness and worth and value, everything changed and it can for you too.
And finally, you are phenomenal when are pursuing what you are here to do. When you are following your dreams. Living your dreams according to your own terms or at least pursuing them. Your dreams will fuel you and make you feel so good, so strong because you will have Universal Forces pushing you forward.
So sisters, if you know that you are a phenomenal woman and she’s inside screaming to come out or if you want to spend some quality time with her, then take the time to find her, connect with her and get to know her, without the distractions of your busy life, of work, of family, of relationships, social media, etc.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
